The Dark Knight is a 2008 American superhero film co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan. Based on the DC Comics character Batman the film is a sequel to Batman Begins, which was released in 2005. Christian Bale reprises the lead role. Batman’s primary conflicts in the film include his fight against the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his strained friendship with district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart). The Dark Knight opened on July 18, 2008 and ultimately grossed $67,165,092 on its opening day, beating the previous record. For its opening weekend in the United States and Canada, The Dark Knight accumulated $158,411,483,topping the previous record of $151.1 million also held by Spider-Man 3.
For his conception of the film, Nolan was inspired by the Joker’s first two appearances in the comics and Batman: The Long Halloween. The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago (as was Batman Begins), as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong. The director used an IMAX camera to film six major action sequences, including the Joker’s first appearance in the film. The Batsuit was redesigned, with a cowl allowing Bale to move his head. The film also introduces a recreation of the Batcycle, known as the Batpod.
Warner Bros. created an aggressive viral marketing campaign for The Dark Knight, developing promotional websites and trailers highlighting screenshots of Heath Ledger as the Joker. After Ledger’s death in January 2008, however, the studio refocused its promotional campaign.

Created by Jerry Robinson, Bill Finger and Bob Kane, the character first appeared in Batman #1 (Spring 1940). Throughout his comic book appearances, the Joker is portrayed as a master criminal whose characterization has varied from that of a violent psychopath to a goofy tricksterthief. He is the archenemy of Batman, having been directly responsible for numerous tragedies in Batmans life, including the paralysis of Barbara Gordon and the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin. Throughout the characters long history, there have been several different origin tales; they most commonly depict him as falling into a vat of chemical waste, which bleaches his skin and turns his hair green and his lips bright red, giving him the appearance of a clown. He also suffers a mental breakdown from the trauma of this transformation, which turns him into a psychopath. The Joker has been portrayed by Cesar Romero in the Batman television series, Jack Nicholson in Tim Burtons Batman, and Heath Ledger in Christopher Nolans The Dark Knight, which posthumously earned Ledger an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
