In the movie Batman with Heath Ledger, the Joker gives two different stories on his facial scars ?

In the movie Batman with Heath Ledger, the Joker gives to different stories how he got his facial scars. One story is about is his alcoholic father and the knife drawn to his face ‘Why so serious’ and the other about himself with respect to his sick wife trying to appease her by putting razor blades in his mouth. My question is whether or not the Joker is purposely lying about his past.
Let me clarify, I meant to say is the Joker conscious of the fact that he is lying

Its an homage to The Killing Joke graphic novel by Alan Moore. Which a lot of people consider to be the best joker origin story. In that story the Joker says that he can’t even remember how he became the Joker one day he remembers it one way the next day another way. If he has a history he prefers it to be multiple choice.
