What is the best way to start reading comics?

I know the question sounds like common sense, just pick up a comic and read. I am very interested in the Marvel Universe and I would really like to begin reading earlier comics. I know I’ll never get issue 1 of The Amazing Spiderman , But I would like to read it. I’d like to find the most cost effective way to read them as well. Any opinions, thoughts, hints or tips that you may have would be greatly appreciated; thank you!

You can read many, many Marvel stories from the 1960′s and 70′s, including the first Amazing Spider-Man stories, in the Marvel Essentials collections. They’re black-and-white reprints of multiple issues (at least twelve in a collection, I believe) that you can find in book stores all over. If you want to save money, don’t buy them, just go to a Barnes and Nobles or a Borders, grab the ones you want from the graphic novel shelf, plop down, and read ‘em. It’s what I do.

Alternatively, I’d advise just digging in to a comic that looks interesting to you. That’s what I did when I was younger. What you can’t find out from the context or the explanations within the comics themselves, you can find in back issues, the Marvel Essentials, or just Wikipedia or here at Answers.
