Computer can’t recognize an external hard drive.?

On one computer,(1) no problem on another (2) there is no indication the external drive is there. I have tried turning on and off, disconnecting, all combinations of plug unplug ect. The device does not appear in Disk manager or Device manager. I tried a mouse in the same port and the computer (2) found new hardware. Dis connected and tried the HDD in the same uSB port but no recoginization. The (2) computer has 2.0 USB ports (enhanced in the device manager). I might think the HHD is a problem if it didn’t work in (1). Both computers are Dell’s about 3 years old and comparable.
I”m about to scrap the whole thing and go back to cd’s. However, since I’ve spent so much time following threads and researching the problem I’d like to know the answer. And yes, I’ve checked the BIOS and the formatting on the HDD. Shouldn’t need either as both computers are running windows xp.

Lone Ranger

Try downloading the driver from the External drives manufacturer.. That would work in most cases. I have had similar problems with Western digital external drives, easily fixed with the driver.
