How many people know this about the First Amendment?

Apparently, there are certain limitations to our First Amendment rights that many Americans don’t know about. That is, sedition is illegal. There is a concept from English common law that is referred to as “seditious libel”, and this concept has been borrowed by American jurisprudence. Even though the First Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1791, the rights it guarantees were limited as early as 1797 with the Sedition Act, which made it illegal to write or print anything defaming the government. The act was passed, because it was feared that the French and Irish immigrants were dangerous revolutionaries, thanks to the French Revolution and the rebellions in Ireland against the British.

Both Sedition Acts are no longer in force, either through expiration or repeal. Many people considered them to be unconstitutional. There are limits to free expression (Shouting “fire!” in a crowded movie house is the most famous example, but “fighting words” and obscenity are among the others), but sedition is no longer one of them.
