What is a good program to use to make an online comic?

I’m looking for an easy to use program to create a professional looking online comic, similar to Explosm, or Order Of The Stick in design. I currently draw all my comics by hand and then stick them on the computer so that I can put them on my myspace page, but I want it to look more professional.

Although I’m on the computer a lot, I’m still a beginner when it comes to image programs. I hate using photoshop because it’s so complex. I’m thinking maybe a Gif type program so that I could also make an animated comic if I wanted to.

I’d like this software to be free, so please don’t suggest anything that I’m going to have to pay for just to see how it works.

It sounds like you’re looking for something along the lines of Comic Life or Comic Book Creator 2. Unfortunately, both these programs need to be bought. If you look hard enough (rapidshare, bittorrent) you can find them online.

Getting to know how to use Photoshop or any other digital imaging software is the only way to be able to digitally manipulate your images to get them the way you want. If Photoshop is too complicated for you, you might want to give Paint.NET a try. It’s simpler than photoshop.

The trick to doing any kind of digital imaging editing is to work in layers. For comics, you’d normally want to work with your panel outlines in one layer, your artwork in a layer below and your text bubbles and text in a layer above.

Also, it looks like you took a photo of your work. You should get a scanner. Scanning your images instead of taking a photo of them will better capture the white of the paper, so you won’t have that grey/brownish color you have in the photos you posted.
