Flaming Lips Tickets – Five Reasons Wayne Coyne Is Awesome (That Are Unrelated To His Music)
Wayne Coyne has always stuck out as a unique individual. Seeing him on stage, with his avuncular personality and perennially white outfits, he comes off a little like Willy Wonka wearing Tom Wolfe’s wardrobe. He’s relentlessly zany and upbeat on stage, and online reports seem to indicate he’s like that in normal life, as well.
This is the kind of guy who invents noisemakers and foam guns to impress the neighborhood kids. This is the guy who walks around in giant plastic bubbles over the heads of his crowds. Wayne Coyne, one starts to suppose, must never get bored.
But even outside of his music, Coyne has earned himself some cred for sheer awesomeness. Here’s a list of five nutty things that we love about the guy.
Christmas on Mars: Number one with a bullet is Coyne’s optimistic film about Mars colonists, alien super-beings and the wonder and magic of the Yuletide season. Christmas is fun in an exuberant way, and we bet Dec. 25 in the Coyne household is a site to behold. In this movie he directed, featuring himself and the Flaming Lips, Mars’ future residents discovers the meaning of Christmas.
Halloween in Kansas: The only thing Wayne Coyne seems to love more than Christmas is Halloween. For several years, the Oklahoma City native has joined in the annual Ghouls Gone Wild parade, which brings out OKC’s wildest costumes for a celebration of things that go bump in the night, candy, and probably in some quarters, alcohol. Coyne leads the “March of 1,000 Flaming Skeletons,” which winds throughout the downtown area with costumed revelers in tow.
His house looks like a space egg: Wayne Coyne’s house looks like something a particularly tripped out rock star would come up with. How appropriate! In recent years, sites like Pitchfork.com have brought to its readers’ attention the elaborate designs Coyne has drawn up for his own sprawling property in an otherwise normal, working class Oklahoma City suburb. Smooth, white hallways make parts of the interior of the house look super-futuristic, and architectural designs that have been posted online feature—no joke—a dragon. Should we repeat that? A DRAGON.
He’s not shy, even when the Google Maps truck passes by: In early 2010, various sites began noticing that Google Streetview revealed a bit of clutter in front of Coyne’s home. Looking closely at it, the clutter appeared to be a bathtub sitting right in his front years—with someone suspiciously Coyne-looking sitting in it. What can we say? The man loves a good bath.
He’s not afraid of the avant-garde: AllMusic.com has a pretty good summary of the Flaming Lips’ career. But our favorite story from the band’s ups and downs was Coyne’s Parking Lot Experiments. This involved Coyne taking 40 cassette tapes and recording 40 different pieces of audio—from music to random noises—onto them. Then he tried to collect 40 cars with tape decks and tried to play all the tapes simultaneously, more or less to make it sound like a kind of discordant orchestra. We’re not sure what conclusions he reached at the end of the experiments, but he never seems to play this material during concerts. Make of that what you will.
