The Storms of Mars
O’er the Plain of Amazons
Mighty Ares
sires a daughter
birthed at dawn
spins dervish dances,
tearless search
for what can match
her all ecstatic
wild fury
drunkard’s walk?
Above the Erythaeum Sea
Mighty Ares
sires a son
birthed from evening’s
howling gale,
gritted breath to
challenge mountains
scour vales and
screams his pain
through bitter night.
Smell the dusty acrid perfume
over wasted desert’s breadth
atmospheric
pheromonics
flung to
frigid, thinnest air!
Chase, careen across Red Planet,
deny Sol’s Eye
and moons their sight
long nights full stained
with blood red shroud,
mad cyclonic, winds are racing;
a hazy veil
around the world…
.
Swirling, the Golden Plain
they circle, measure each
their fullest strength
profoundest need
of each they fathom,
intertwine
with melded power,
and shape anew
vast Ares’ face!
Cosmic! Absotively cosmic!

Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, they first appeared in Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos #1 (May 1963). The main character, Sgt. Nick Fury, later became the leader of Marvels superspy agency, S.H.I.E.L.D.. Nicholas Joseph Fury was the eldest of three children born to Jack Fury. His father was a United States citizen who enlisted in the United Kingdoms Royal Flying Corps during World War I. Jack had enlisted in 1916, and later stationed in France. Given the rank of lieutenant, he reportedly shot down Baron Manfred von Richthofen early in the Red Barons flying career, and was a highlydecorated combat aviator by the end of the war in 1918. Built in the 1810s, she saw wartime service in an attack on Barbary pirates at Algiers in August, 1816, captained by Constantine Richard Moorsom. The ship after it left his command was converted to an Arctic exploration ship. The Fury made two journeys to the Arctic under the command of William Edward Parry. Both voyages were made in company with her sister ship, HMS Hecla. Her first Arctic journey in 1821 was Parrys second in search of the Northwest Passage.
