Any Dick Tracy fans out there?

I just ordered the first three volumes of the Chester Gould strips from IDW Publishing.

Watched a couple of the 1945 movies this past week.

Early Dick Tracy material is rather enjoyable and I think you’ll find that quite a few Batman villains were inspired by Dick Tracy villains (Two-Face, for example, would have fit right in with some of Gould’s villains like Dr. Hump, Jerome Trohs, the Mole, or Mumbles). The Tracy strip also had the distinction of being the first newspaper strip to depict graphic violence, and did so without outraging the public. I was always impressed by Tracy’s ability to survive beatings that would have killed most men; he never made being a police detective look easy.

Although I do own a copy of the first Dick Tracy movie serial, I always thought the movies watered down the material to the point where Tracy and company were barely recognizable. The exception is the Warren Beatty film from the very late 80s, which was fairly faithful to its source material but which didn’t draw much of an audience (the film’s attempt to imitate the look of four colored comic strips was a failed experiment).

It’s good to know that there is still some interest in Dick Tracy, since both the character and the first twenty to twenty-five years of his career do deserve to be remembered.
