hypothyroidism symptoms?
i was diagnosed with hypothyroidism on 8/27/09, and i have been taking thyroid medication every morning (levothyroxine). and i still get symptoms. does that mean the medication isn’t working?
but the thing is, i get less chest pains, but now i get more muscle weakness, and dizziness. is it just me adjusting to the changes?
SYMPTOMS I GET;
mild muscle pain,
mild to moderate dizziness,
weakness in arms, legs, and hands,
chest pains, (on rare occasions)
depression,
tingly-ness in legs(very very rare)
neck, back, shoulder, and wrist pain,
&& joint pain and muscle pain.
NOTHING IS WRONG WITH MY HEART,
as the doctor said so. so we can rule out
heart disease and other heart related things.
other pills i take : 2 gummy vitamins, 1 waltin(allergy relief) 1 calcium chewable, and this yellowish pill for my hormones, for my period.
are any of those pills blocking out the
thyroid medication.

Levothyroxine is not a drug, it’s a synthetic form of the thyroid hormone T4. You are taking this pill to replace what your thyroid gland isn’t able to produce enough of.
You should have been started on a small dose, probably 25 to 50 mcg. The doc should have you scheduled to come in about six weeks after starting the replacement hormone for another set labs.. These labs will, and your symptoms, tell the doc if you need an adjustment in dosage or not, likely you will since it takes time to work the dosage up to get the blood saturation rate of hormones that your body needs to feel well.
The reason behind waiting that six weeks to have the next set of labs (and this is the same after every adjustment) is to allow your body to adjust to the change in hormone levels. You’ve only been on replacement for a few weeks, your body isn’t even fully acknowledging the increase in that T4 hormone you are taking.
T4 is the thyroid storage hormone. It is first processed in the stomach where stomach acid removes the sodium molecule that is attached to the T4 molecule during the manufacturing process. It is then absorbed into the blood stream. From there it is circulated throughout the body where it’s stored in the tissues. As storage levels build and the body determines how much hormone is being added to the system consistently it starts to take T4 from the cells and convert it to the active thyroid hormone T3. T3 is what is used by the body to ‘run’.
Sadly.. we have to wait out this adjustment period after each dosage change…
It also matters how you take your dose of synthetic T4.
You must take it on an empty stomach to ensure sufficient stomach acid to be available to remove the sodium molecule and keep absorptions rates as consistent as possible, that’s also why it’s suggested to take the dose the same time every day, for that consistency.
It’s important to not take any other medications, supplements or herbals when you dose the thyroid. Especially things containing calcium or iron. Both calcium and iron bind with thyroid hormone making it unusable by your body.. as if you’d not taken it at all. You’ll want to keep the calcium and vitamins you are taking separate by at least 3 to four hours. A good plan is to take those supplements with lunch, since they should always be taken with a meal. Some folks find that inconvenient and choose to take them with supper instead
There are also foods, goitrogens, that affect thyroid hormone levels, some affect how the thyroid gland itself functions, some affect the efficiency of the body’s ability to convert the storage hormone, T4, to the active thyroid hormone, T3. Avoiding this foods can help a LOT! The two most common, and most harmful, are soy and HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) Eliminating them from your diet will be a VERY good thing to do.
As your dosage is gradually worked up and your body converts more active hormone your symptoms should start to reduce/go away.
